The following was probably written by A. William Griest (b. 6-5-1846) in Feb. 1916. “An incident of more than ordinary interest occurred in the family. (Susannah Griest b. 11-8-1796) Susanah’s paternal grandfather (Daniel Griest, b. 10-9-1737) was a man who was highly respected and influential in the community. He had a neighbor who had a son who was incorrigible, but this man, Daniel Griest, could sometimes quiet him. They sent for him one day to come over as the boy was behaving in a bad way. Just as he got in the house the young man came downstairs with his rifle in his hand. Grandfather said, “Why thee don’t intend to shoot me.” Just then he put the gun to his shoulder and shot him through the breast. They carried him out in the orchard where he died that evening. According to their way of stating, it happened on the 7th day of the week, the 7th day of the month, the 7th month of the year 1777. The murderer was finally acquitted on the plea of insanity.” (The year 1777 was probably incorrect as July 7th came on a Monday that year, but it did come on Saturday in 1787)
